Kendal Bowmen run beginners courses about four times a year. Generally they start around October when we move indoors and April when we move outside.
If you fancy having a go at archery but are not sure if it is the sport for you the Beginners Course is a good way of finding out more. The course runs over 6 weeks split into around six, two hour sessions. The timetable for the course looks at little like this:
Week 1 – Introduction to shooting. All archers taught point of aim technique using a basic training bow.
Week 2 – All archers taught the Mediterranean Loose.
Week 3 – Technique improvement and the better archers moved to a more sophisticated training bow called a recurve.
Week 4 – Further technique improvement for all archers and a talk on the different bow types available to shoot.
Week 5 - Further technique improvement for all archers and a talk on different types of archery. If the weather and the course is running in the Spring or Summer we may change this to a trip up the wood and a go at field archery.
Week 6 – Normally this involves a short competition, possibly leading to your white arrow award, followed by advice on buying your own bow.
The cost of the course is £30 for adults and £25 for juniors. The club supplies all the equipment you need on the course and we have bows to match all sizes and physical abilities. It does not matter if you are not very fit. Archery is a sport that can be enjoyed by all ages. That said, for safety reasons, we do have a lower age limit of 11 for beginners courses. You must do a beginners course to be allowed to join a GNAS affiliated club.
We welcome disabled archers and have the coaches trained to deal with most disabilities but please feel free to ring and discuss your needs before signing up for a course. We also welcome archers from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
At the end of the course you may decide archery is not for you. About half the people going through the course for one reason or another decide not to continue. If you want to continue you will be welcomed into the club and the club coaches will continue to help you improve. You will be able to continue to use club equipment for up to another 6 months so there is no urgency to get your own kit.
We do not run courses unless there is room in the club for you to join. Because of constraints on space at our indoor venue, for safety reasons we do have a maximum number of both adults and juniors allowed to join the club. As such there is sometimes a waiting list for courses. Watch the web for details of the next course.
